Mental Fitness: The Missing Piece in the Healing Journey
As May comes to a close and we welcome the summer season, it’s the perfect time to reflect on Mental Health Awareness Month and the crucial role that mental fitness plays in recovery and well-being.
We often focus on physical rehabilitation, but mindset, beliefs, and emotional resilience are just as important in shaping healing outcomes, recovery speed, and stress response. The best results come when we integrate tools that support both the body and mind.
Strengthening Mental Fitness: A Simple Yet Powerful Approach
One of my favorite strategies for building mental resilience is using mantras or affirmations to counter self-doubt and foster a more positive mindset.
A personal favorite:
“All I need is within me right now.”
Positive affirmations rewire the brain for success, helping patients (and ourselves) avoid the downward spiral of negative self-talk that can stall progress.
Coaching for Mental Fitness: Breaking Through Self-Sabotage
Recently, I became a Positive Intelligence (PQ) coach, guiding clients through a six-week mental fitness program designed to silence the inner critic, reduce self-sabotage, and cultivate resilience. A patient’s internal narrative plays a massive role in their healing journey—uncovering their story and working collaboratively with them can shift their mindset and accelerate progress.
This is something we discuss often on the Tough to Treat Podcast—especially the 3 essential questions to ask every patient during their history:
1️⃣ What do you believe is going on?
2️⃣ What does a successful outcome look like to you?
3️⃣ Deep down, what are you most worried about?
These questions reveal how patients perceive their condition, allowing us to address both the physical and emotional barriers to healing.
