Expanding the Scope of Women’s Health in Physical Therapy: A New Perspective

Introduction

I’m excited to share a new milestone in my journey as a physical therapist and women’s health advocate-my latest co-authored paper, “Women’s Health Across the Lifespan: A Sex- and Gender-Focused Perspective,” has just been published in the Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal!

This publication represents a vital shift in how we approach women’s health in our field and highlights a more comprehensive framework to serve women and girls better.

Why Traditional Approaches Fall Short

For years, women’s health in physical therapy has predominantly centered on sexual and reproductive health. While these are undeniably essential areas, this approach leaves out significant aspects of women’s well-being and doesn’t fully reflect the health challenges women face at various life stages.

Our new paper argues that we must adopt a sex- and gender-informed perspective to understand the full picture of women’s health. This means considering not only biological differences but also the impact of gender roles, societal expectations, and structural disparities that influence health outcomes over a woman’s lifetime. By doing so, we can shift from a narrow focus to a holistic, multidimensional understanding of women’s health needs.

Key Themes and Insights from Our Research

In this paper, we explore several key themes that illuminate the complex ways sex and gender affect women’s health, rehabilitation, and outcomes. Here’s a glimpse of what we uncovered:

  1. The Interplay of Biology and Social Roles

From birth to advanced age, the combination of biological and gender-based factors creates unique challenges. Women experience different risks, disease presentations, and responses to treatment due to hormonal changes, caregiving responsibilities, and social expectations. These disparities underscore the importance of a holistic view that accounts for these nuanced factors.

  1. Critical Gaps in Research and Data

Despite well-documented differences in health needs, much of our health outcomes research lacks sex- and gender-disaggregated data. This oversight limits our understanding of women’s health patterns, making it harder to develop effective interventions. Addressing this gap is essential for evidence-based practice that truly meets women’s needs.

  1. A Call for a Multidisciplinary, Coordinated Effort

Improving women’s health outcomes across the lifespan requires collaboration across multiple facets of physical therapy-**practice, education, research, and policy**. By adopting a sex- and gender-informed approach, physical therapists can better serve their patients and contribute to long-lasting improvements in women’s health.

The Role of Physical Therapists in Shaping Women’s Health

As physical therapists, we’re uniquely positioned to drive this change. We can go beyond traditional practices by focusing on each woman’s unique story, context, and health challenges to tailor care plans that address both biological and gender-specific needs. This includes recognizing the caregiving demands placed on women, addressing their role in maternal and fetal health, and accounting for the physical toll of societal expectations.

Our hope is that with a broadened scope and greater awareness, physical therapy can become an advocate for improved health outcomes and a leader in addressing sex- and gender-based disparities.

What’s Next? Taking This Knowledge Into Practice

Whether you’re a clinician, researcher, or student, we can each play a role in moving women’s health forward. As the evidence for a more inclusive, sex- and gender-focused approach grows, let’s work together to bring these insights into our daily practice, research, and advocacy.
